MartiniqueMartinique is one of the showcases of the French Caribbean. Not just another beautiful Caribbean island with its tropical climate, white sand beaches and lush mountains and volcanoes, Martinique and its capital, Fort de France exude the French lifestyle, brimming with culture and flair. In fact, people have said that is it like a “little France” but with the warm Caribbean hospitality. From the shops, to the art galleries, theater, and museums, you will experience the same Parisian elegance and sophistication that you would find in France. The wine is reasonable here and so are the cheeses and pates. Street side cafes and old men playing boules in the squares complete the scene.

MartiniqueThe climate is relatively mild, with the average temperature in the 75°F to 85°F range. At higher elevations, it's considerably cooler. The island is cooled by a wind the French called alizé, and rains are frequent but don't last very long. Late August to November is the rainy season. April through September are the hottest months.

The early Caribbean people, who gave Columbus such a hostile reception, called Martinique "the island of flowers," and indeed it has remained so. The lush vegetation includes hibiscus, poinsettias, bougainvillea, coconut palms, and mango trees. Almost any fruit can sprout from Martinique's soil, including pineapples, avocados, bananas, papayas, and custard apples.

MartiniqueBird-watchers are often pleased at the number of hummingbirds, and visitors can also see mountain whistlers, blackbirds, and mongooses. Multicolored butterflies flit about, and after sunset, there's a concert of grasshoppers, frogs, and crickets.

The north of the island is mountainous and lushly forested. It features 4 ensembles of dramatic pitons and mornes (mountains): the Piton Conil on the extreme North, which dominates the Dominica Channel, the Mount Pelee, an active volcano, the Morne Jacob, and the Pitons du Carbet, an ensemble of 5 beautifully shaped, rainforest covered extinct volcanoes dominating the Bay of Fort de France at 1,196 meters. The most dominating of the island's many beautiful mountains, with 1397 meters, is the infamous volcano Mount Pelée. The volcanic ash has created beautiful grey and black sand beaches in the north (in particular between Anse Ceron and Anse des Gallets), contrasting markedly from the white sands of Les Salines in the south.

Since the island is so popular, we have created seven suggested itineraries for you. They range from five days to twenty-two days with round trips including anchorages in the Grenadines, Union, Antiqua, Grenada, and St. Martin. You can spend as little or as much time in each location, your schedule is your own.

OUR MARTINIQUE BASE
MartiniqueLe Marin Base / Marina du Marin
Like all of our bases, we went out of our way on Martinique to avoid the crowded city, so that our guests could spend a quiet first or last night on their boat in a lovely marina. Le Marin is just that. We are conveniently located less than 30 minutes from the Lamentin International Airport (the airport code is (FDF) because it is located near Fort-de-France). You can easily pick up a taxi at the airport or we can help you arrange for a transfer to our base during the booking process.

There are several restaurants and a supermarket nearby Marina du Marin.

Martinique / Martinique: 5 days

There are so many wonderful islands, beaches, and places to choose from. So where do you go first?  Well, you can head off in any direction you want, but many of our guests ask us for at least a weeklong vacation plan. So here we go:

Day 1: Le Marin (Anse d’ Arlet)
Depending on the time you arrive at our base in Marina du Marin, you may wish to head into Le Marin for dinner and a little bit of shopping. Then head back to our quiet base to spend a restful night before you head out in the morning. If you arrive a bit earlier, and still have a few hours of sunlight left, you may decide to sail away to either Anse d’ Arlet or spend your first night on the boat in a lovely anchorage. It is all up to you.

Day 2: Le Marin / Anse d'Arlet: 15 NM
Sail towards Petite Anse d'Arlet passing close to the Diamond Rock. Stop for some lunch and your first dip into the warm sea. Spend your first night at the anchorage at Grande Anse d'Arlet.

Day 3: Anse d'Arlet / Saint Pierre: 16 NM
Cross the bay of Fort de France. Sail along the Caribbean coast until you see St. Pierre, the former center of economy that was destroyed by the eruption of Montagne Pelée in 1902. Visit the museum of vulcanology. Anchor overnight in the bay of St. Pierre.

Day 4: Saint Pierre / Anse Mitan: 15 NM
Embark upon a late morning sail to Fort de France. Enjoy lunch on land and explore the city. Anchor overnight at Anse Mitan in the South of the bay.

Day 5: Saint Pierre / Anse Mitan: 15 NM
Wake up early, take one last dip, and sail to Le Marin where the Dream Yacht team awaits you.

You’ve had a great adventure, done a lot of sailing, perhaps drank a bit too much, snorkeled too much, laughed and ate too much – but that, for sure, was a week you’ll always remember!
The fact is, there are many, many possible approaches to your vacation. You can head off in any direction you want and spend the time in so many different ways. What you will learn is that, after your first charter, you will want to come back time and time again – there is that much to explore in this gorgeous island paradise.
